I don't agree entirely with the TG4 analysis. As with any exhibition of Irish photography you will get the odd "stage irish" image. I would like to know which particular photographer they were referring to, although I probably could hazard a guess!

Yes the bad labelling and crampness of some of the hanging space is annoying, but this is a great collection of photographs and well worth seeing. I think the book is very good, well edited and commented (and no you can't borrow it beforehand ;-)

So go and see it soon and let us know what you think.

As an aside, its great to see IMMA getting so popular. I have been there many times on a Sunday when its been very quiet.

I hadn't mentioned it up until now, but, I watched a review of the exhibition and the accompanying book on TG4 last week, and neither received very favourable reviews.

They said that whilst the section detailing the Troubles (and the 70's in general) were very good, due to the fact that many of Magnums top photo-journalists turned up to cover the troubles, the rest of the book / exhibition were very poor, especially the section taken by one of the photographers (who's name escapes me) who took pictures whilst in Ireland on honeymoon. The word was that these shots amounted to no more than regular honeymoon snaps, and done nothing to capture Ireland, it's people and culture the way a photo collection by some of the worlds greatest photographers should.

I haven't been along to IMMA for it yet, but, I've heard as many bad reviews as good ones about it now, so, I'm not as enthused as I had been a few weeks ago.

Do people who've seen it already agree?

I am split as to whether it's a shame that the general lasting feeling about the exhibition was of disappointment, or that at least it wasn't just me being a little tired and scratchy. It was the busiest I've ever seent IMMA, and the Magnum exhibition in particular sh/could have been incredibly accessible in a museum that does occasionally remind me of the feted UK Culture Minister's comment: "Conceptual Art? Conceptual Bullshit."
But you are quite right. Bad labelling and layout spoiled it altogether: Without their names so much of the photographs was lost and, particularly the section in the new galleries, came over as exceptionally 80s, but not Irish as such. Ignore the new galleries and head to the small but comfortable bench with two books of the exhibition to flick through. But make sure you head to the basement for the Maze photos- which is, earlier comments notwithstanding, excellently displayed!

This is a great exhibition. However, I do agree with you redmum that the way its laid out makes viewing uncomfortable, with or without pregnant lady ;-). I would have preferred if the entire collection was in one place. Also the photo descriptions were not as detailed as those in the accompanying book which is a bit annoying. The Eve Arnold photo was my favourite - the red haired girl from Aran making soda bread with her father looking on - down on the end wall of the ground floor space (aka Gordon Lambert gallery). Definitely well worth a visit as is the Howard Hodgkin exhibition upstairs.
