Dirty Dub

RedMum | May 3, 2006

CAN anyone explain to me the logic of business bin collections taking place in the evening? The sight of a massive pile of rubbish bags outside businesses with a bus stop of commuters snaking their way around the smelly offending mounds is unfortunately common.

bags of rubbish

It wasn’t that long ago when I would queue for a bus outside McDonalds on O’Connell Street and that was just revolting particularly in the summer evenings because of the sheer amount (not to mention smell) of rubbish bags. While I don’t use that bus stop anymore I doubt it is any different.
It’s just a thought but wouldn’t it make sense to have rubbish collections in the early morning, away from commuters and away from tourists? Household collections are done in the morning and recycling collections are done before 7am, so couldn’t business waste collections take place before 7am? While it means some businesses have to send someone in early, is that such a bad thing? I don’t think so.
The system as it is currently carried out just adds to Dirty Dublin’s reputation and well it is just vile.

Couldn’t agree more Redmum. I lived in the city centre for a few years and I can tell you it wasn’t much fun for the residents either. One of my flats was on the second floor above a pub and other shops and the smell on a hot day would mean I couldn’t open my windows.

[...] Now back to the Irish Business Against Litter, wouldn’t it also make sense as I posted about here before to negotiate with Dublin City Council to have commerical rubbish collections lifted in the early morning. [...]
