Shy about rolling up your sleeve?
Dervla | June 28, 2006I donate blood regularly. Since I’m the only member of my family that can and I’m O negative I feel its important. And when you get phonecalls from the IBTS saying “babies need bloodâ€? it kind of focuses the mind!
However, it seems to me that people are just not interested in donating blood any more. None of my work colleagues were interested. Some of them genuinely can’t donate, however, there are quite a few who didn’t want to for one reason or another. The best excuse I got (and I got many) was “I don’t like the idea of someone walking around with my bloodâ€?. I’m still quite amused at that one.
Is it easier to put your hand in your pocket and donate money to charity rather than roll up your sleeve and donate blood to save someones life? Whats the difference?

Jaysus someone actually said I dont like the idea of someone walking about with my blood. That is just idiotic.
I cannot give blood here because I am from Belfast. Though I did give blood the last time i was in Belfast with my Mum. We had just gone to visit my cousin who subsequently died following a short fight against a very aggressive cancer. He was regularly given blood which sustained him for longer than he would have had.
Give blood. You do feel good about yourself afterwards because you are helping people.
It ended up that there was an IBTS clinic in the hotel where my gym is last night. I went looking after I was in the gym last night, and apparently as I’ve not given blood before, there’s a bit of work involved in getting myself set up and such. Given I was wrecked after a session in the gym, I said that I’d look into it again shortly and get started. I too believe that it’s exceptionally important, and have absolutely no valid reason for not having done it up to now. I will however right that wrong very shortly!
Yeah, if your a first timer, or have lapsed more than 2 years you’ll have a short interview/chat with a doctor – nothing too mad. 2 hours free parking in Fleet Street too if you donate at D’Olier St.
Yes Red Mum, someone did actually say that. I was gobsmacked and completely speechless.
I think its really important to donate if you can. It became more significant to me when a friends baby was born very premature and he explained how the baby wouldn’t have survived without many pints of blood. Scary really.
Hmm, Car Park on Fleet Street, office on Fleet Street….wonder can I give 4 pints of blood every day of the week?!
