What do you think of?
Heidi | June 29, 2006I have a friend leaving Ireland soon to go back to America to work. I am making her a photo album of Dublin and Ireland to remember her time here. So, this is meant to be an interactive post. When you think of Dublin or Ireland, what do you think of? I want to make sure that I have the “good” pictures.
So far, I have:
pint of Guiness
Grafton Street
O’Connell Street
Ha’Penny Bridge
Avoca shop
Kilkenny shop (she goes there often)
Arnotts (again, she likes to shop there)
The spire
Double Decker Bus
St. Stephan’s Green
Pictures from St. Paddy’s day
What else is a “must have” in a Dublin/Ireland photo album?

I would snap a Guinness beer mat in a pub setting she calls her local. I would also take a picture of cobblestones in either Temple Bar or Smithfield. If you’re offering Stephen’s Green, give her a duck.
I’m thinking Trinity College, a busker, Moore St fruit & veg market, Tayto crisps, Luas, and maybe the wall of fame in Temple Bar, might be the closest you’d get to photographing U2 !
What’s a busker? The fruit and veg market and the beer mat are a great idea. I am taking pictures of the Porterhouse which is where we call the local. That is going into a special frame since we’ve spent so much time there.
Don’t forget a picture of Bonavox on Henry Street too! (it’s a hearing aid shop that Guggi used to give Bono his name in case you’re not sure!).
Buskers are the musicians who litter the streets in Temple Bar and Grafton St, singing and performing with that wee tray out in front of them for change!
Don’t forget a picture of a chugger too!
Howth from Dun Laoghaire, and vice versa. Tracksuits and hands full of tacky rings (a pale version of what one might see stateside). The rooftops taken from inside Merrion Square. An ATM queue. An empty leafy suburban avenue (Glasnevin, Rathmines etc.) on a sunny summer Sunday morning.A disabled anything sign. (I love that one. Does it mean the thing used to work but doesn’t anymore?)
I’ll rattle my brain later, further.
Hill 16, Sunday with the city full of football fans standing outside pubs.
those buttons you press to change the light so you can cross o’connell street
the post office, of course–its bullet holes
that cool little used-bookstore along the quay–what’s it called, the crooked staircase?
heuston station
How about the following;
Dublin Castle, The Liffey, Trinity College, Dublin Mountains, The Canal & Phoenix Park.
Ok, I may be late to comment on this, but I just found you. I lived in Dublin and came back to the States, and here are somethings that I’ll never forget:
-Little old ladies laden with grocery bags standing on the bus as it rips around turns
- An Lair signs (properly spelled of course)
- Sailboats all along the coastline on an early summer eve – best seen from Blackrock
- The last busses of the evening loading-up just after the bars closed, with people stumbling everywhere trying to make sure they don’t miss their ride home. Not to mention the singalongs during the journey.
- The late afternoon summer sun on people’s faces – it always made everyone look cheery and beautiful.
Dublin, I hope you’re still a glitter at sunset. MWA
