Another bomb scare in Dublin Airport

Daragh | July 7, 2006

Following on from Tuesday’s Bomb Scare in Dublin Airport, it would appear that Dublin Airport has been closed within the past 20 minutes (circa 08:00) due to another bomb scare. Certain areas of the airport are being evacuated at present. The army bomb disposal squad are currently en-route. Entry to the airport has been closed down. More details on this as they happen…

If anyone has pictures from the Airport this morning, please mail them to pictures@dublinblog.ie

UPDATE 08:23:

According to Dublin Airport Police, a bomb warning was telephoned in just before 08:00 and that the main terminal in the airport is currently being evacuated. AA Roadwatch are reporting very heavy traffic in the area as roads into the airport are closed off and the morning rush is in full swing.

UPDATE 08:32:

According to Dublin Airport spokesperson, a suspect package was spotted on the Arrivals Hall floor which needs to be investigated. He did not confirm if there was a telephone warning however.

UPDATE 08:44:

RTE News have a reporter on site who says that people are abandoning their cars on the road up to the airport and trying to walk to the airport. Traffic is backed up from the Airport Roundabout back onto the M1 and M50 motorways, resulting in traffic being at a stand still in the airport vicinity and one of the main routes into the city.

UPDATE 08:51:

Ryanair have a statement on their site indicating that arrivals were evacuated at 07:50, departures at 08:10 and that passengers who had already made it airside are being kept there and not evacuated from the terminal yet.

UPDATE 08:54:

It looks like outbound flights from the airport have now ceased, with the last flight departing at 08:32. Unlike last Tuesday, it looks like inbound flights are being seriously delayed also. Live departure information can be found here and live arrivals information can be found here

UPDATE 08:59:

The army bomb squad has just arrived at the scene to investigate the suspicious package.

UPDATE 09:51:

No change on the situation yet, the incident is still under investigation, and the airport is still shut down for now.

UPDATE 10:00:

AA Roadwatch are now reporting an accident on the Old Airport Road to further add to the traffic woes.

UPDATE 10:02:

THE SECURITY ALERT IS NOW OVER

Dublin Airport Authority have just confirmed that the security alert is now over. The Army Bomb Disposal Squad have carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package in the arrivals hall, and the Gardai have given the all clear to re-open the Airport. The DAA, in conjunction with the airlines and relevant authorities have agreed a plan for re-opening the airport, and resuming normal service. Security and facilities staff will re-enter first, with passengers being allowed to re-enter shortly after.

UPDATE 10:38:

Flights both into and out of the airport have now resumed, however there are large delays and some cancellations amongst all airlines, with the DAA estimating that some 3,000 passengers have been directly affected by this incident, and many, many more by the knock on delays.

UPDATE 10:48:

The airport may have re-opened and flights may have resumed however, it would appear according to this Dublin Traffic Camera at the Airport Roundabout that traffic in and around the airport is still at a crawl. You can also see that there are cars abandoned on the grass verges!
