I feel strongly that people who listen to music so loudly that it can be heard by others nearby should be forced to pay music royalties to the artists.

I doubt that they would be held liable if sued but you never know. McDonalds had to pay out a lot for a woman burning herself (very badly) on their coffee. ASHA (American Speech-Langauge-Hearing Association) has done research on some common electronic devices. The article can be found at:
http://www.asha.org/turndownthevolume/tech-damage.htm

It is interesting to me since I am a speech therapist but also that devices being marketed to children have a capability of being dangerousely loud.

I often hear other peoples music on public transport and I can only imagine what damage it's doing to their hearing. I go to a lot of gigs and sometimes the sound level is turned up uncomfortably high, or else I'm getting old! But on the personal music devices, would these companies be liable to be sued if their products cause loss of hearing? That would force them to reduce the maximum volume available on their devices.
