Anti-war demonstration, July 29

RedMum | July 30, 2006

Today’s anti-war demonstration was a loud, colourful and well-attended protest. From a slow start at the Gardens of Rememberance with too many long speeches (sorry but they really were however the duration allowed many late-comers to catch up) it certainly was a success.

The march proceeded along O’Connell Street, up to the Dail, and back to Central Bank. I stood at one stage opposite Trinity and there were thousands on the march passing me. It was an excellent turn out.

By the time it got to Central Bank for more speeches the numbers had dwindled some. But it was an excellent show of people, from young to old, to members of our Muslim community, to punters who happened upon the march on their Saturday shopping day.

There are more pics on my flickr account as well some from Decs.

I’ll also be loading more over the next couple of days.

Well the thousands who were on the demo for a start give a hairy crap (a what!!), and possibly you because you took the time to comment.
Anyway the important thing is that there are protests all over the world against what is happening in Lebanon, I’d say thats important. But then I give a *ahem* ‘hairy crap’ :)

I think his point may have been that a few thousand protestors, where there that many, no mention on any of the major news sites, isn’t going to change any power brokers opinions. There were demonstrations by the millions in the US before and immediately after the Iraq war started and that didn’t seem to make any difference. I guess I’d also say that from the pictures, the timing and RedMum’s comment that this has more to do with Lebanon than Iraq. While Bush is a horrible excuse for a man and a president, I don’t think you can really solely blame him for this one. The US should not be selling weapons to Israel for this sort of attrocity but I don’t think you can blame the whole disaster on him. Frankly I doubt he is happy about it at all since there is a lack of oil in Lebanon and this just hurts his overall plans in that regard.
