Yup, U2 would be better to appoint their own manager or construction company or whatever, and build a hospital/metro station/swimming pool rather than giving the money to the government. (I hope they will do that.)

I agree with Antoin. U2 still pay tax on their business earnings, like their tours. Why should they pay more tax, especially to this government? So the government can buy more useless e-voting machines? Or maybe pay some computer consultants for unusable software?

Besides, the coffers are already overflowing with a billion euro of stamp duty spoils. It's not as though the government needs the money.

Fair points. I am known to wear a cynic hat, but not when it comes to Bono :-)

Why would he contribute to the exchequer if he doesn't have to? It's not as if he's reducing his contribution - he's just restructuring to keep it at the same level as before. The reality is that his tax money won't make any difference whatsoever to the government's contribution to foreign aid. Extra taxes that are collected are mostly going towards driving public sector inflation rather than for any particular useful purpose.

A cynic would say that Bono's acquisition of Forbes is an early step in his propaganda plan for a new fairer world order! Seriously though, U2 is a serious investment monster, they have money all over the place in all sorts of stuff, through Elevation partners and many other vehicles. Some of it makes money for them, some of it doesn't.

Antoin (beginning to sound like Bono's publicist, which he is most definitely not).

Maybe "principle" is the wrong word. I'm just surprised that U2 are not prepared to contribute to the Irish exchequer however Bono will continue to badger our government to increase foreign aid.

I didn't say it wrong, I just think its a strange move for someone who has been so focused on helping the third world to be turning their attention towards buying media outlets.
