Thanks for your comments Ray. It wasn't obvious from your first post who you were representing which is why I asked about the Galway drivers. Its interesting to hear your perspective. I do have some sympathy for the drivers who will struggle with the new fare structure however, I completely disagree with the approach of ignoring the union and pressing on with the militant approach of jamming up the city. Lets hope the negotiations with the Dept of Transport work out for all.

Well, if i cn address the Galway drivers first. I do not speak for them and therefore I cannot really give you reasons for their actions. You would have to ask them.
As for the action that was taken, I feel very sorry for the people that were discommoded but sometimes things have to be done that we do not like to do to get the attention that we are entitled to. We are now talking to the Dept of Transport regarding an appeals process regarding fares etc. There is a real problem with some self employed drivers in some parts of the country here they will loose up to 23% of their income with the intorduction of the new fare system. I would hazzard a guess that if your boss decided to drop your wages by 23% you would not be too happy about it and take action. I feel that we were talking to the regulator and were getting nowhere with him. He was not really listening to us.
I hope that clears up my point of view for you.

Take care,

Ray

Daragh,
I am not into personal attacks at all. Everyone is entitled to their view. Some may not agree with mine and I guess a lot don't so I want to thank you for letting me reply.

I have no problem with people making a stand for what is fair. However, it is not fair to assume the general public will have any sympathy for strikers who go against their union and cause the traffic chaos that was last Mon. Taxi drivers rely on the custom of the general public to earn a living. Alienating and discommoding your customer base is probably not the best idea.

Maybe you could explain to me why the Galway taxi drivers didn't go on strike during the Galway Races?

I'd hazard she's go about it in a legal way that does not hold the commuting (general) public to ransom on a grey / wet Monday afternoon. I'd also imagine that if she had a union mandated to represent her interests that she would not halfway through an organised, union backed strike, militantly decide to take matters into her own hands, loosing herself almost every bit of respect and sympathy that the general public had for her plight.

Dialogue is what's required to resolve the issue, pig-headed bully boy tactics will not work, and most certainly will not endear yourself to anyone (keep an eye on our poll over the coming week to see how it pans out out of interest).

And Ray, if you please, outline clearly and concisely to us what your grievances are, what your position is, how these affect you and what you want to see done. Feel free to do it here in comments, or mail me - daragh@dublinblog.ie and I'll ensure that they get noted here, if you put forward a concise argument, and don't delve into personal attacks or anything that could be considered libellous.

Why Dervla, because we have to make a stand and fight for what is fair? I can guarantee you that if the same restrictions and conditions were imposed on you in your job you would stand up and fight for your rights.
