Mmmmmm….. Coffee…..
Daragh | October 10, 2006I suppose it was seeing posts about coffee that inspired me again (don’t worry – my own blog is getting just as neglected with this “work” thing too…)
I’ve had a very hot and cold relationship with Starbucks since they came here. Had a couple of very decent experiences, then started blowing very cold after a couple of times in a row where I came away very disappointed. Then I discovered the Frappucino. Sweet Jesus how many calories are in that thing?!?!?!?! And just how addictive could it be?!?!?!?!?Â
I remember many moons ago Gloria Jeans outside the Powerscourt Centre used to do a thing called the mocha chiller that I fell in love with and this was it’s grandaddy obviously. Weirdly even after we got our own in work I started to resist even more but I gave up the day after David came back over with a venti americano that lasted me the first hour of the show and kept me flying for the rest of the evening… Not a great atmosphere in most of them but still we’re going to be assimilated whether we like it or not.
I still prefer places like Cafe Java in Blackrock (where I’m blogging from as I type!), the Queen Of Tarts on Dame Street, the Dome at the top of the Stephen’s Green Centre, Idlewild in Dalkey or even that place that does the wicked crepes at the top end of Nassau Street (sorry, short term memory rapidly failing the more I do this feckin’ new job…. Must be something to do with new information coming in one end and old being forced out the other!)
Was in the incredibly artificial Bewley’s Cafe at Newland’s Cross the other day. Reminded me of all the happy, warm, cheap times I spent as a student and penniless early 20-something in the one on Westmoreland Street. The coffee was very much crap but the ambience more than made up for it
Maybe, as Daragh has suggested, we should come up with a “definitive decent non-Starbucks coffee in Dublin list?
R

Agreed Rick!
I’d like people to suggest their favourite coffee shops here, then we’ll throw together a poll for people to vote on the best coffee shop in Dublin. Who know’s, we may even try and arrange something with the winning shop after it all!
I think coffee shops in Dublin are the pits!
Went hunting for one last night around O’Connell street at 8.30pm and they were all closed or closing.
Are there any decent late night coffee shops?
(bearing in mind that I hate cafe molka these days)
Not sure i know of any other late night coffee shops sorry…
A relatively new but very nice day-time one is KC Peaches in the Enterprise Centre on Pearse Street.
I also like the coffee shop in the Unicorn that’s recently been done up, nice lattes.
My pet hate is how Insomnias are slowly but surely taking over Dublin city centre. I am not mad about their coffee and there is never a comfortable atmosphere to sit down and enjoy your coffee… anyone else any thoughts?
Hi! Did you realize that there was the SCAE European Coffee Team Challenge in Dublin from 8-11. Octobre (Ireland placed 3rd)? See scae.ie for infos (and hopefully updates soon). Actually, I found the Bewley’s in Grafton Street quite okay and met some of the baristas and trainers at the competition, they were generally quite knowledgeable!
Lukas
cafe divino in mount merrion is the best coffee on the southside mmmmmmmmm so creamy i can taste it now !
Hi Guy’s
I’ll shall leave you with one name and see if you find the coffee in Dublin “ILL CAFFE DEL DUOMO ORO” promise it is the best coffee in Ireland
cafe divino uses this coffee i think from deemac
I can promise you that decent coffee is a rarity in Dublin. At least Starbucks make a consistent coffee and you know what you’re getting.
I got so fed up though of bad coffee that I’ve started importing it myself. I’m only importing speciality coffees which immediately means I’m getting the finest coffees that you can buy. And I’m selling thrm them through my website at Peaberrys too! (www.peaberrys.ie).
Whats a speciality coffee then and why is it different or better? Is there anywhere else selling it – although I’ve looked at http://www.peaberrys.ie and there does seem to be a very good range. How do they compare with say Starbucks beans? Has anyone tried buying directly from Peaberrys.ie?
Hey Mary, why not go to http://toomuchcoffee.com and figure out what’s it all about
Regards, Lukas
i had the best coffee i ever drank in fitzers dawsons st it was so good i visit there alot. i found out the name of the coffee is ‘cafe duomo’ ooohhhh wat a lovely coffee i would highly rate this coffee………
serena
A speciality coffee is one that is internationally recognised as being of superior quality to more common coffees. They are typically shade grown at high altitudes and are always single origin rather than blends. This means that they have recognisable flavours, aromas and tastes characteristic of their origin.
Having said that I’d be perfectly happy with a Starbucks coffee, even one of their single-origin beans (such as the Ethiopian Sidamo) but if I wanted something a bit special I’d go for a speciality coffee.
There’s lots of other information at http://www.scae.ie if you’re interested.
cafe di napoli on westland row (behind trinity) is in my opinion the best in dublin
Rick your right, the Dome on in //st. Stephen’s Green s.c and Idlewilde in Dalkey are my favourites both have great coffee and really nice staff. Important compo!!
Any late night coffee shops in the city center with free wifi? Looking for places that stay open until at least 1am.
I agree with K.C peaches having good coffee they keep their machine immaculate and have trained baristas also Cafe Divino have a new shop on bachelors walk for those of you looking for a good cafe near O’Connell street, the coffee is good i believe its the same Italian Del duomo used in mount merrion. Enjoy
James
Yeah James i was in cafe Divino on a few occasions since it opened and the coffee is top notch ! only 2 Euro for a take away 12oz duomo oro ! best value premium coffee in city by far.
athena’s bakery on prussia street has the best coffee i have tasted in a long time , and im hard to please.
I had a coffee from the bald barista on aungier street…..Wow is the only word to describe it.Not only is the coffee great(not sure of its name)But the barista really knew what he was doing!!!
My new favourite Coffee-House!!!
I heard poxy Starbuck’s is opening in Dalkey. What a shame cus its really crap and way too dear i’ll still be going to idlewild though, ‘best coffee in Dublin’ it’ll always be streets ahead!!
I agree with the bald barista, he’s really upping the standards in dublin. Top class. The only one on a par or better in my opinion is the ariosa guy in temple bar farmers market but he’s ony there on saturdays and I’m normally too hungover to make the trip into town!
Best coffee in Dublin is Mugs in Dalkey
also discovered there is NOWHERE in Dublin City where u can get a coffee after 7pm
Myself and my friend scoured the streets to find a coffee shop but alas everywhere was closed.
P.S it’s true, Starbucks is opening in Dalkey soon
Hi there everyone. The best coffee I’ve had for a long time in Dublin is in Hillbilly’s fast food in Fairview. Great Italian coffee and they are open late.
Bar Italia on Wood Quay does great coffee as does its sister restuarnant in the Italian quarter. Even better is the other other small coffee shop there opposite Enoteca del langhe (beside the mural).
COSTA blanchardstown sc – the quality of the coffee was shameful, and for €4.10 for a medium sit in latte, the value was terrible. Will never return. Gerrards in busaras is a good spot, although a standard coffee was€2.10, the coffee had a nice velvet texture – awesome
