This link has a map for the postal codes. It is a general map but the only one I have found. I used it when I was moving over. http://www.dublintourist.com/maps/dublin_postal_codes.shtml

As for no-go areas. That depends on your preferences. There are rougher areas but I don't know them all. I found it useful to find housing when I moved over. I looked at a lot of different places. A lot of housing depends on where you will be working, what you are willing to commute, and if you are going to try to rely on public transit.

There's a good alternative especially for the short term, it's a free accommodation booking service specializing in the Dublin area called Almara Accommodations Dublin (esb.1991) They find and reserve Hostels,B&Bs,Apartments and Hotels at no charge. If you prefer you can ask them to do an availability search and they will give you the contact details to reserve for yourself. This is useful when considering where to live long - term, it gives you the chance to come to Dublin and choose where to live while actually staying here. See their enquiry/advice form at www.almarabb.com/almaraa.htm or their sister company at www.almarabb.com

Yes, I would 2nd threshold.ie as well and the PRTB http://www.prtb.ie/ Landlords in Ireland are pretty much a pain in the ass and don't like to observe the laws in my experience. I would recommend an Agency over a private landlord any day.
