The Killers – RDS Main Hall – Feb 28th
Dervla | February 28, 2007I was lucky enough to get a ticket for the Killers gig last night. I’m a big fan. However, I couldn’t help get the feeling after this gig that I could have stayed at home in a room and listened to both albums, loudly, back to back. When I spend eur60 on a ticket I want to be entertained. Whilst they sounded great and the crowd seemed to love them, I just felt they didn’t do anything more than whats on their albums – apart from a Joy Division number. The only thing Brandon said to the crowd was “hello Dublin, its windy”. I realise he’s not exactly Mr. Personality, but I just feel they could have done better.
What do you think? What should I expect for my eur60 quid ticket? Or should I just be grateful I got one?

I know one thing…I’d be really pissed off if I had spent EUR 60 on my ticket and had that chap standing in my way with his camera all night!!!
LOL! Ditto, Daragh!
I think live shows are a great opportunity for artists to stretch their creativity a bit and have fun with different arrangements and crowd interaction. I’m always a bit disappointed when all you get is the straight forward approach (especially at 60euro!)
We saw The Decemberists at Vicar St. a few weeks back and they were brilliant. Their creative and winsome (albeit, quirky) stage presence almost breathed new life into their music.
Ha ha, very funny guys
I wasn’t as it happens – that was just the best photo of the lot that I took.
Haven’t heard of the Decemberists Brandon – I must check them out.
they were good in the olympia when they played – I cant imagine its easy to get an atmosphere going at the RDS
Very surprised at your comments. I was at that gig myself, having been disappointed when they cancelled in November. I felt the gig was excellent. I’m all for artists expressing themselves in live venues but how many times have you went to hear bands live, only for them to disappoint entirely by trying out silly covers and generally underperforming. This band for me is at the top of the tree – live or otherwise.
Brandon, I was there at the Decemberists–I tend towards thinking the sort of stage presence is unbearably cheesy but it turned out to be tons of fun. I think in those situations you have to just ride the wave.
Music’s good too-for some reason the concert was my first real exposure to it. Went straight onto my iPod, in fact.
Good to hear, Grims. Lots of good music coming from my home region of the U.S. (pacific northwest).
I agree though – some bands try too hard with the stage antics and it bombs. What I liked about The Decemberists (and particularly, their front man, Colin Meloy) is how they engaged the audience. Seeing the mid-show calistenics from up in the balcony, for example, was hilarious! That kind of participation practically puts fans and band on the same stage together.
Ahh, pacific northwest. And all I have to offer from Kentucky is My Morning Jacket. And Bonnie Prince Billy. Not to mention a fine band called Lone Official who no one’s heard of, and it’s a damn shame.
No, the mid-show calisthenics were particularly charming. I’ve never crouched on command at a show, and I have to say I didn’t feel silly doing it. That’s gotta say something…
HeyAnyone know what the name of the Joy Division cover they played on the 28th Feb??
Grims, My Morning Jacket is a great band! That’s saying something for Kentucky!
I also went to see the killers in the RDS. I thought they were fantastic, i am a huge fan of them. I was delighted that i got to see them play live and was not bothered that they did not interact much with the crowd or sing anything other than what was on their albums, i suppose they want any new stuff that they are writng to be a surprise for their new album. Was that a joy devision song? I’ve been trying to find out what song it was because i thought it was great. I paid way more than 60E as the tickets had sold out and i had to pay more for it, but i thought the killers were worth it.
The Joy Division song was “Shadowplay”.
A musician friend of mine says he likes to play things differently on stage compared to on cd. Change things for the live show.
That sucks that you didnt enjoy the concert. I am a huge fan of The Killers too. I don’t like it much when bands barely say anything to their fans – fans who have spent a heck of a lot of money to see them be extremely repetitive on stage when, as you said, they could just go home and listen to the albums on a great sound system.
The name of the joy division song is “shadowplay”. I do not like the original version much though, i would much prefer the killers version. Apparently the killers version will be on the soundtrack for a film later on in the year.
I think that it should not matter how much the band interact with the crowd, i thought the killers were excellent even though they sang much the same as on their album, i think its the whole thing of seeing your fave band on stage and the atmosphere thats created that should count. I have been to a lot of concerts where there is not much crowd/band interaction and it has never bothered me before.
