I find that regular coffee (white for me), which I prefer, is more of a gamble than a latte--expecting filter coffee and getting something that tastes remarkably like instant, for example.
A latte I find more reliable in tasting like real coffee. But more importantly, it has one shot espresso, as opposed to the two in cappucino (or at least it's supposed to), which gives me the jitters in the afternoon.

An Americano is espresso with hot water. So it's not the same as filter coffee. But I have noticed in most coffee shops in Dublin that if you just order coffee, you'll get an Americano, which is cool by me. It actually has a little less caffeine than filter coffee, unless you order an extra shot (or 3!) of espresso.

I was hanging out with my brother in Spain a few weeks back and whenever we ordered coffee there, it was "cafe con leche" (coffee with milk). Essentially just half a cup of espresso and half a cup of milk. Wasn't bad, especially if they used good quality espresso beans, but you really can't do that with filter coffee. (Though some cafes certainly try!)

This may be true, or at least the way it's supposed to be, though everywhere I have ordered coffee filter is always very different from americano.

Except...in Dublin, even in most coffee shops, you ask for a black coffee, you will get something that's been stewing on a hot plate for hours, you ask for an Americano - despite the fact that they have coffee there stewing, they will always make up a fresh proper Americano for you there and then! Strange, but true!
