Zoos are simply a jail for animals, do you think they want to be there? No matter what, it can never be as it is in the wilderness where they belong.

Yeah, the opening hours were a surprise to me too, but when you think about it, they need the time to ensure everyone is out and no one is accidentally locked in overnight! Plus the animals have to be fed and looked after for the night. In summer time the hours are longer, up until 6.30 in some months I think.

When I was there I didn't give much thought to the size of the animals' scrotums, but thanks for that anyway Dario!

Isadub, I didn't notice that any of the animals seemed mad, but I'm no expert. To be honest, they seemed happy enough to me, running and playing or just simply feeding and sleeping. I did notice a lot of staff around though, so if you go again and are concerned next time, I suggest you ask a staff member - could be an animal was ill when you were there and that might explain why they seemed odd to you. As for the map, I'm ashamed to say we didn't really use it, just wandered around mostly.

Sounds like a great day out. Having seen those animals in the wild, I personally could never go back to visiting zoos.

UCD have forced us to go to the Zoo many times on fieldwork. One question was:
Compare the size of a monkey's and a gorilla's scrotum.

Marvellous. I nearly threw up.

The opening hours are pretty damn awkward though. 4.30 closure? That sucks!

I was in Dublin Zoo on Saturday and I had a slightly different experience than you. I thought some of the animals were 'mad'. I'm not an expert but I thought that one each of the hippo's, the organgutans (?), the red panda, and the snow wolf (?) were slightly mad/psychotic.

It's definitely a good place for families to visit (& learn) but I think I might be reluctant to go back.

P.S. Did you find your map accurate enough?
