Living in Dublin since october 2009 i have following experiences:

- rent for my fully furnished 1 bedroom appartment: 800 € (compared to belgian standards housing is not as qualitative and appartments tend to be rather small
-electricity bill: 50€ in summer up to 150 € in winter (electric heating)
- no cost for water (is freee in ireland)
- standard dinner in retaurant/pub: 15 to 20 €
-bustickets in dublin: 1.60 €

Based on my experience of living alone I think you need 2000 €/month to be able to live comfortably in Dublin.

Dublin is an expensive city, but the good news is things are getting cheaper. The recession is biting and prices are falling but not as quickly as in some places. That said there are cheaper options around now than there was a few years ago. There will always be expensive shops and accommodation but if you shop around you'll find good quality stuff at reasonable prices. If you have a dream job I'd recommend taking it.

Hi,
I see that its quite an old thread but wanted to know something so posting here in hope of a response :)

I live in london and have a house here and for some family reasons can't move but I want to work in Dublin as I'm getting my dream job there.

Can anyone tell me if it is a godd idea to do a daily up and down from Dublin to Heathrow if *feasible* at all?
I've done some reasearch and travel timing-wise it is feasible as there are flights everyday to and fro and within my budget.
Also I really need to know is that howz the border control, I mean Immigration at the airports. How long does that take?

We are a family of 5 living in Bray. We came from America about a year ago and were quite shocked at the cost of living here, to say the least.

The most shocking thing is the cost of owning a car. Besides the price of the actual car, you have to consider the road tax. For a 2.0 litre engine, you're going to be paying more than 500 EUR year for road tax (in Seattle, we paid less than $50 per year!). Insurance is about 650 per year (and that's without having a FULL Irish License). Cost of petrol - in January 2009,it's just under 99 cents per litre --- which is still about 4x what we paid in Seattle! The biggest killer here is the VAT % on the good here. The VAT itself accounts or most of the cost of petrol here!

We tried to go several months without a car in Ireland. We managed to survive about 8 months -- and finally just got very annoyed at having to rent a car twice a month or so.

However, I would say if you're here for less than one year -- don't even bother buying a car. You can find great weekend rental deals at Enterprise.ie. For example a class A mini car is about 40-50 EUR for the weekend (if you waive the insurance).

If you're going to be without a car, consider living close to DART or LUAS, and other public transport (such that it is here! )

Grocery bill (family of 5 and 1 dog) is about 800-900 EUR per month --- and that's for mostly basic food items (we rarely buy high-end grocery items like wines, beer, etc.).

Tesco generally has all-around decent prices for most items -- but Lidl stores tend to have even much better deals (but not as great a selection). Lidl is a great place to buy general household supplies in larger quanitites than you can get at Tesco (laundry detergents, soaps, cleaners, etc.), also great for canned items (especially jams).

For eggs and fruit, consider checking out the smaller, independant market stalls you occasionaly see around town. For example: There are a couple market stall places in Bray that sell a tray of 20 eggs for 2.99 EUR (in contrast, it's over 3.20 EUR for 18 eggs at Tesco).

Ham is outrageously expensive here. But we just recently discovered "off cut" or "misshapes" bacon packages you can get at Tesco or Lidl (and possibly some other stores) --- Basically it's package of odd-shopped bacon ham. It's about 2 EUR per KG, which is an excellent deal.

I hear now that stores will start carrying "odd-shapped" veg as well -- but not sure what that will mean for costs.

Our electricity bill is an outrageou 120 to 150 EUR per month --- for moderate usage (at least by American standards). Gas bill is roughly the same, just slightly lower.

Hope that helps.

BTW: If you have friends in America, here are some great suggestions for "gift packages" (things that a normally outrageously-priced in Ireland that are much cheaper the states):
1. Medicines, vitamins, etc.
2. DVD movies
3. Childrens Toys
4. Household supplies (tape, etc.)

Things that we were pleasantly surprised to find much CHEAPER in Ireland!
1. Potatoes
2. Services (such as out-of-pocket medical care, auto repair, misc. repair services).

BTW: Avoid Woodies DIY store unless you have NO other choice! They are so over-priced it is laughable! Consider visiting a local, hometown, independant hardware store or home supply shops BEFORE considering Woodies! THe same holds true for many large, chain stores.

Great post to have an idea of the different costs we all face - I wonder what an updated one would look like?
If it makes things a bit easier there are some money saving tips on my website.

Thank you for describing typical costs in Dublin. It's hard to get a picture of something without the specifics as you gave them. I agree, I think it is rather costly, but then again its getting that way all over isn't it? It's a shame that things are so high.

hi heidi,
It is apparently clear to us that Dublin is indeed a little costly, however, could you please detail us some more of what is really in store for us, for example common grocery items, maybe at least 35 of them, mobile plans/network or fonecards, water, electricity including what equipments or machines you basically use, weather, and if you may include other county as wicklow, especially bray area just to know if prices are more cheaper compared to Dublin. Hoping to hear more from you. thank you!
