Frank Gratkowski will make his Irish debut with Dublin based trio CLOG in an evening of improvised music, interaction and movement which will also feature Greek dancer Marguerite Papazoglou.
The programme will include a solo set from Herr Gratkowski along with a quartet set and finally a quintet improvisation with dance.
Frank Gratkowski is a major figure among European improvising musicians, having performed and recorded with musicians including Michael Moore, Greg Osby, Kenny Wheeler, Louis Sclavis, Ernst Reijseger, Phil Minton, Peter Brötzmann, Mark Dresser, Mark Feldman, Han Bennink, Mal Waldron and Misha Mengelberg.
His biography includes past performances at festivals across the world, a hectic touring schedule as well as several projects with some of the most important voices in contemporary creative music today.
CLOG is a trio dedicated to contemporary improvised music. Rob Casey, a virtuoso pianist, holds a degree from Leeds University as well as a masters in music technology from Trinity College, and has impressed audiences recently with a surefooted technique and an unwavering artistic approach.
David Lacey is a drummer/percussionist who uses traditional acoustic drumset, percussion/objects manipulated via crude electronics and field recordings. Active in improivised music since 1997, he has collaborated with international figures such as Keith Rowe, Rhodri Davies, Mark Wastell and Derek Bailey, as well as regular work with Paul Vogel and Fergus Kelly. He is also the co-curator of the annual ‘i-and-e’ festival of improvised music, which takes place this year at the end of March.
Seán Óg is one of the bright lights on the Dublin creative music scene. His music sits somewhere between free improvisation, avant-garde composition, and contemporary jazz. “He brings a forceful mixture of irreverence and seriousness to his projects.” – Journal of Music in Ireland. .His work with his own group Trihornophone led to winning Music Network’s Young Musicwide Award in 2007.
After an initial training in theatre Marguerite Papazoglou moved towards contact-improvisation dance, butoh, and improvisation techniques. She has studied with Julyen Hamilton, Simone Forti, Emmanuel Grivet, Carlotta Ikeda and Yoshito Ohno. She has notably choreographed dance scores for multidisciplinary performances (e.g. interactive technologies at Festival Villette Numérique in 2004, video at Festival Urban Bodies in Cyprus 2006, installation at Chisenhale Dance Space in London 2007). She has worked with many well recognised musicians including Antonis Anissegos, Frank Gratkowski and Thymios Atzakas.
