Earth Hour Dublin 2008
RedMum | March 30, 2008As written about in the previous post, last night saw Dublin’s participation in Earth Hour. I was at the Customs House to watch the lights go off and the pics below show before and afterwards. A video of the lights going out is available here.
According to news reports today there was a drop of 50 megawatts nationwide in energy demand last night in comparison with last week. You can read more on Ireland.com, on the Earth Hour blog and the official Earth Hour website.

Brilliant! Thanks, RedMum. I was wondering about how it went in the city centre. I noticed on one news site that “Dublin’s financial district blazed away with light, illuminating floor after empty floor of desks and idling computers.” Apparently, there was some disappointment for Dublin’s Earth Hour organizers as a result, but I’m betting that it will catch on a little more next year.
[...] As last year, most major cities and landmarks all over the world will deliberately switch off as many lights as possible for one hour at 8.30 PM local time tonight. This year Earth Hour is the biggest grassroots marketing campaign the world has seen. [...] Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the iconic ‘Change, Progress, Hope’ imagery for Barack Obama in the recent US Presidential Election, has created the artwork for WWF’s 2009 Earth Hour called ‘Vote Earth’. HOPE ALL WILL REMEMBER!
Well done Dublin City and Redmum.
I agree with Brandon, next year will be even better! Only found out about Earth Hour yesterday but love the idea of it and I’m thinking next year an ‘Earth Hour’ Party! Just candles, beer, wine and company for an hour!
