We advise tourists to avoid O'Connell Street at night because of it's history of crime. I don't agree that the work that will need to take place will affect tourism. But, really, we cant have it both ways - we have been complaining for years about the woeful transport network in Dublin, now that something is finally going to be done about it, people are still moaning! O’Connell Street is a so beautiful avenue; it would be terrible to make works on it for several years. As a new Dubliner, I admit that public transport (bus + dart) is very bad for a European Capital, but does it deserve to destroy the city centre? But from what I experienced on my 5 months stay in the city (about 1 1/2 years ago) Dublin already was somehow a big construction site at that time (however not the city center).
