Car Free Day
Dec | September 22, 2008Now that everyone is in work it might be worth announcing that today is World Car Free Day.
Every September 22, people from around the world get together in the streets, intersections, and neighbourhood blocks to remind the world that we don’t have to accept our car-dominated society.
In previous years there have been events held around the city and street closures. Strange this year I have not heard anything about the event, especially seeing that we have the Green Party in government and I would have expected them to push days like this.
Has anyone seen anything in town or any street closures?

Yesterday was my first day back at work after a week away so I’d no idea it was Car Free Day. I cycle 5km across the city to get to the office and I didn’t notice any difference in traffic levels at all!
It’s pure lip service at this stage, none of the public transport companies bothered to contribute (except Dublin Bus, if you live in Ballymun and were travelling between 8 and 10am). And Dublin City Council wasted what budget they had on a street market and a “sand painting”. Ridiculous.
The Dublin Cycling Campaign held a stunt on car free day. This year with the focus on ‘We need our space’, highlighting the necessity for motorists to keep a safe overtaking distance. See more on http://home.connect.ie/dcc/
