Dublinr

RedMum | October 16, 2008

In the last year I moved from Phibsboro to Stoneybatter and while I loved living in Phibsboro I have to say I absolutely love Stoneybatter, even the name is brilliant. There is a wonderful atmosphere in the area and being a stone’s throw from Smithfield, it is definitely worth spending an afternoon wandering about and enjoying the best of old Dublin meets new.

Between the coffee shops, local shops, great pubs, delicatessens, cinema, horse fairs, it is all happening here and one particular exhibition is coming up that you should definitely make a point of seeing and thats Dublinr, a photographic exhibition in the Joinery, made up of some of Dublin’s favourite Flickr members.

It opens on November 5th (so remember remember the fifth of November) and knowing some of the photographers from Flickr it will be well worth checking out.

Here’s a map to the Joinery Gallery, which incidentally is a relatively new space. I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of it pre-opening and I am very much looking forward to seeing it finished with amazing photographs on the walls. The Dublinr exhibition runs from November 5th (remember remember) until Sunday 9th, 11am – 6.30pm daily.

I am delighted to see exhibitions like this and I know there’ll be more, having heard murmurings of the same over recent months. So watch this space, the best of luck to Dublinr (I know it’ll be great), make sure you catch it.

Open House Dublin – Oct 17th to 19th

Dervla | October 14, 2008

This weekend sees buildings selected for their architectural quality and interest open their doors to the public.

Now, in its third year, Open House Dublin has grown from strength to strength and is the only event which successfully promotes public awareness about the built environment, and uses buildings and the spaces in-between to inspire an audience to interact with their surroundings.

Our topical and diverse programme includes stunning private residences, landmark public buildings, eco-conscious apartments, award-winning civic offices, contemporary cinemas and art spaces, historic monuments, as well as the essential civic infrastructure of schools, libraries and community centres, rounded-off by tours of Dublin Airport and Dún Laoghaire’s historic East Pier Battery. To explore our public spaces, we have compiled an extended programme of walking tours.

Open House Dublin is a free event with some events requiring prebooking. A list of participant buildings and date and times of opening can be found on the Architecture Foundation website.

In addition, an Open Debate “Has Dublin Changed For The Better?” takes place in Liberty Hall on Thursday, Oct 16th at 6.30.

The economic boom of the past fifteen years has undoubtedly manifested itself in an architectural renaissance and the city has seen immense growth and development. But has Dublin really changed for the better?

This is my first year being in Dublin whilst Open House is on. I’ve volunteered for the event and I’m very excited. Hopefully I’ll have enough time to see everything.

Let us know your thoughts if you get to visit.

Christchurch

Christchurch is an amazing iconic building/s in Dublin. Reaching over a main road, its origin’s date back to an original Viking Church in 1030. Find out all about Christchurch here and explore medieval Dublin at Dublinia here (the pic was taken of the Dublinia side of Christchurch).

Donnybrook, not so rough today.

Dec | October 2, 2008
The word of the day on Dictionary.com is Donnybrook.

donnybrook \DON-ee-brook\, noun:
1. A brawl; a free-for-all.
2. A heated quarrel or dispute.

The word comes from the suburb of Dublin called Donnybrook which used to be famous for its annual fair where loads of fights and brawls used break out. Today its one of the more affluent and posh areas of Dublin. It is also home to the Leinster Rugby team so there hasnt been any brawls or fights in the area for years.
