Dublin Bus to cut buses
Dec | November 23, 2008The Sunday Tribune today reported that there are big cut backs on the way in CIE, the public company that runs Dublin Bus. As well as cut backs in train and national bus services the Tribune is reporting that around 100 buses will be removed from the Dublin Bus fleet resulting in reduced frequency and even withdrawal of services on some routes. Added to the reduced services will be an inflation busting 10% increase in fares.
The problem with public services in Ireland today is that the service part of the equation is being downgraded while the payment from the public always increases. We are going to have to pay more in fares while waiting longer to squash on to over crowded buses. The Green Party in government claims it wants to encourage people to use public transport yet it insists on making public transport more expensive and cutting back services at a time when they should be providing more transport options to more people both inside Dublin and around the country as a whole. Billions will be spent building a metro line and underground train station to serve thousands when they should be looking at options and solutions that provide viable public transport to millions.
I guess it’s back to the car for many people next year.

i cant believe that! actually i pay 113euro monthly for both luas and bus, i need them in order to get my office every morning, and they’re gonna cut&increase ahahahah seems like a joke, that is madness!
Compared to other cities in the world, the quality of service that Dublin bus provides is appalling. I don’t think that I need to get into details of how bad Dublin Bus’s service is because most people who use it regularly are well aware of that. How can they justify the removal of 100 buses? Why are they increasing fares when fuel prices are actually dropping? How are people expected to stop driving to work when fares are constantly rising and service level is dropping?
The government has no right to ask people to stop driving cars until they can provide an satisfactory transportation system and Dublin Bus’s sporadic service is far from acceptable.
I would not expect anything better, after all we are talking about the same idiots that raised the VAT while retail shopping plummeted. Meanwhile in the UK not only the prices were lower then rip-off ireland, but they lowered VAT as well.
And guess where people like to shop for xmas?
How can they justify removal of 100 buses? No money – simple as that.
The majority of routes – believe it or not bring nothing but losses. These routes cannot be simply cut out because taking bus service out of certain areas isnt the way you win election votes.
Places like Finglas road for example are full of buses – 40,40a,40b,40c,40D,140, and locals still complain (!) but these routes steal each others customers and cause losses.
If you want more buses Dublin Bus needs more money. It wont get it tough as the goverment subsidy on non-profit routes is actually being LOWERED. Things were heading in the right direction with the likes of 128 route – every 10mins via QBC but we wont see anything like it anymore if goverment doesnt change its policy .
All the plans of new busses/routes via QBC are now being axed because politicians need money for more urgent matters like unemployement benefits for alcos in finglas that are “looking for work” for the last 10 years.
