Hiya, I really do appreciate the launch of this Dublin Bike Sceme, but without decent cycle lanes in Dublin, it is a crazy idea to get on a bike... :( I have just arrived home from the city centre and although I am an absolutely experienced biker, I am totally terrified, as I hardly escaped from some busdrivers, who did not see me at all! I do not know where I should protest or where I should report that cycling in Dublin is simply hazaduos, but one thing is for sure: I will not cycle in the near future here - unless there are cycle lanes... :(

I just downloaded the Dublin Bikes app for my iphone. Its quite handy. It gives the location and number of bikes and stands available in realtime at each site.

@Frank I've noticed a number of people on twitter mentioning this (and much else besides) and it does seem a bit short-sighted. I'm presuming there's a phase 2 planned based on success (or otherwise) of phase 1. However the option at the moment seems a 5 min Luas jaunt to Smithfield and grab a bike there.

By the way anyone using Twitter should include hastag #dbikes to share info. Also if you have an iPhone check in the App store for the FREE! Dublin Bikes app which gives geo-sensitive info about nearest station. Currently I can see that there are 2 spaces and 18 bikes in Smithfield, which is my nearest station.

I also should have said something in the post above about making sure you have at the very least a reflective sam brown belt on you on the bike especially as we approach the dark days of winter. Lights are sadly not enough to draw attention to yourself!

I might give this a try when I'm up in Dublin next week. My only complaint is that they don't seem to have any bike stations at Heuston Station. It's been a few weeks since I checked this out though. Has this this changed?
