Fire on Westmoreland St

Dec | October 2, 2009

Traffic on Westmoreland St was briefly disrupted today by a fire in the nutrition supplement shop Nutrition Connection. Three units of the fire brigade were present and the fire appeared to be quickly contained.

The good news is Westmoreland St is now open and O’Connell Street is open as well now that the taxi dispute has been resolved. The bad news is the llamas have gone missing again so drivers on the M50 beware

Dine in Dublin Campaign

Brandon | October 2, 2009

I’m not sure we could add this to our ‘recession busters’ or ‘how to get by on €15’ categories, but it’s a good deal nonetheless. The ‘Dine in Dublin-Restaurant Week’ campaign will feature a number of restaurants offering three course dinner menus for promotional rates of €25 or €30 (a 20% discount.) The initiative will run from the 12th through the 18th of October and there are over 50 restaurants participating. It may indeed include some of your favourites, so be sure to have a look at the full list HERE.

And if you can’t wait until next weekend for a culinary adventure, be sure to check out Marlay Park this weekend, where the Festival of World Food will be taking place again. (CLICK HERE to see DublinBlog’s write-up on it last year.)

[I'm having a hard time confirming the Festival of World Food event this weekend, so if anybody can provide further information or a website that confirms it, that would be appreciated. It's supposed to be a Dun Laoghaire Rathdown council sponsored event, but their website is showing nothin'.]

Go Vote, Please

Dec | October 2, 2009

Voting is reported as slow in many areas of the country with turn of 2 and 3% in parts of Dublin. Which ever way you vote you should go out and vote.

Update: Good news, turn out in Dublin is well up and is better than most of the rest of the country.

The End of the World Started in Dublin

Dec | October 1, 2009

The end of the world is coming in 10 years time and it appears to have started in Dublin. That is according to the new movie The Road starring Charlize Theron and Viggo Mortensen. The movie is described as “A post-apocalyptic tale of a man and his son trying to survive by any means possible”.

In typical disaster movie style the trailer starts with news footage of the start apocalypse. In prominent position is footage that looks to be from the 2006 Dublin riots. That means we have 7 years until most of us are dead and the survivors are pursued by gangs of lawless killers. So really if things keep going the way they have with mass protests, taxi drivers blocking the city center driving commuters crazy and herds of llamas running rampage around the suburbs 7 years might be an optimistic estimate to the apocalypse.

Llamas Loose for Lisbon

Dec | October 1, 2009

A herd of llamas is loose and is being chased by Gardai on the M50. Yes, seriously, a herd of llamas. It appears that none of the Dublin Community Blog contributers have made it through the traffic to give a report from the impromptu circus but if anyone out there has some photos please post them :-)

Personally I suspect it’s an advertising stunt by one side or other in the Lisbon campaign. After all a llama is the perfect size to hang election posters on and every other spare piece of skyline has already been filled.
